Machine Learning – The Next Big Thing In Education In 2022

Machine Learning

“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” – Nelson Mandela

“The day science begins to study non-physical phenomena; it will make more progress in one decade than in all previous centuries of its existence.” – Nikola Tesla

“We are at the very beginning stages of what promises to be an extraordinary renaissance of AI [Artificial Intelligence] driven by a symbiosis between increasingly capable machine learning techniques and decreasing cost computing power.” – Eric Schmidt, Executive Chairman of Google.

I remember when I first heard about Artificial Intelligence (AI). I was just a kid then when my dad bought me that novel “I Robot”. Ever since reading it, my mind has been filled with ideas about this incredible technology. I mean, we’re talking about machines that can think and do things as well as humans.

I got lost in those thoughts sometimes imagining robots working together with humans enhancing their capabilities beyond the limits of our natural abilities. What a wonderful world it would be! Well… ok maybe not exactly like that but you know what? The robots are coming and they will change everything (well at least where I live).

Why am I telling you all this? This is part of the reason why I’m writing this article – because there is a huge shift going on right now and we should all know about it to take full advantage of it. The shift is happening from old-fashioned education to “smart” modern education where children use computers and tablets instead of notebooks and pencils to learn. This way they learn how to work with smart machines in a very natural way so in the future when these machines are everywhere they will know how to use them effectively.

This shift is happening right now because of three reasons:

1) There are already millions of students who use smart boards (interactive whiteboards) at school every day, which is great for learning math, physics, etc., but it’s also useful for programming (and not only). Nowadays you can find free educational programming software like ScratchJr or Hopscotch even on your iPad! Believe it or not but your kids can write lines of code without typing before they go to school! Cool right?

2) The huge rise of smart machines like smartphones, tablets, etc.

3) The huge rise of cloud computing (services where you can store your data online instead of on physical devices) allows children to make use of these new technologies without even having their computer or tablet!

This change in education is what we call “The Learning Revolution” and it’s growing very fast. Last year in Singapore there was a competition called Imagine Cup where students from all over the world presented apps they made for this competition using Microsoft’s Azure platform (which runs on Windows 8). Guess how many entries came from Singapore? Over 200! This represents almost 10% percent of students in Singapore!

This learning revolution is happening all over the world but very quickly in some countries. Did you know that in Colombia there are “schools without walls” where no teachers ever enter? Instead of having lessons in a traditional way they use laptops and tablets so kids learn while playing on their own. This sounds crazy, right? But wait until we tell you that pupil achievement increased by 65%! Crazy or not, this is real and it happens every day all around the world.

The learning revolution is already here and millions of students are part of it regardless if they’re using smart boards, interactive whiteboards, computers, tablets, or even just pencils and paper together with their brainpower to learn everything from math to physics for free online.

This revolution is happening now and will continue to happen much faster in the next few years. This means that children who grow up with these technologies will be much more prepared for a job market full of smart machines doing everything from farming to finance, etc., where they can use their education as well as real-world experience to lead humanity into the future!

Conclusion:

This is what I mean when I say that the robots are coming and if you want your children to be prepared for the future they better learn how to work with smart machines now (which is not difficult) otherwise they will become obsolete.
