What is Display Resolution?

Display resolution is the number of pixels active on the screen. A pixel is a small dot on a screen. More pixels the better the resolution of the screen. Display resolution does not depend upon the size of your display but rather it depends upon the number of pixels active on the screen. For example, A small 5-inch display with 720p would have better display resolution than the old 24-inch display TV with 240p.

The 5-inch 720p display has more than 2 Million pixels active. This is why size can not be the only factor when buying a screen. Display Resolution is a very important factor to consider when buying a  screen.

Why is Display Resolution important?

Display Resolution is an important factor to consider when buying a screen because it affects the quality of the picture. You might probably be wondering what the quality of a picture or a screen is. Quality while discussing a screen refers to the amount of information shown on the screen at once. The higher the number of active pixels, the higher will be the picture quality.

Low display resolution means a blurry picture/video. Vital information and detail in a picture might appear like an annoying big box. These details play a vital role in users’ experience. That is why display resolution is important to consider while buying a device with a screen.

What is FHD?

FHD

You might have heard of the term HD in your daily life. Anything with detail is nowadays called HD like HD audio, HD speaker, etc.  And you must be familiar with the term HD( High Definition). Well in the case of displays HD refers to the original HD screen. These screens have a display resolution of 1280×720 pixels also referred to as 720p. At that time HD was high quality but now it is not so HD. Now every basic device has 720p resolution.

FHD also known as Full HD is a display with a resolution of 1,920 x 1,080 pixels, also known as 1080p. FHD has twice as many active pixels as HD. It is better than HD in quality, color, and everything. FHD is also basic nowadays.  You will find FHD on every basic device.

QHD and 2k

QHD or Quad HD is four times the size of normal HD resolution. QHD is a display with a resolution of 2,560 x 1,440 pixels. Also known as 1440p. That is four times as much as 720p. It contains almost 4 Million pixels. Double than Full HD. QHD is also known as Wide Quad HD or WQHD because it has an aspect ratio of 16:9 which is wide.

QHD is not as common as HD and FHD but you will find it on flagship smartphones. Moreover, you will find that QHD is also known as 2k because it has pixels half of 4k. But the typical 2k resolution is 2,048 × 1,080 pixels. 2k is 1080p with a wide aspect ratio. That is why you can say that 2k and QHD are not the same.

UHD and 4k

FHD

You might have seen 4k and UHD on the same cover. But 4k and UHD are not the same. Companies used these terms interchangeably but they are not the same. UHD or Ultra HD features a resolution that is 4 times FHD. That means if FHD is 1920 x 1080 pixels then UHD is 3,840 x 2,160 pixels. It has the same wide aspect ratio as 2k which is 16:9.

While 4k resolution is the production resolution mostly used by cinemas. It has an aspect ratio much wider than UHD which you might have noticed if you visited any cinema recently. It has a resolution of 4,096 x 2,160 pixels. Both UHD and 4k are known as 2160p.

What is Display Resolution 8k?

Any display with a width or higher pixel value greater than 8000 pixels is known as 8k. It is not commercially available. At this display level, everything is as clear as real. You will not find any pixels on the screen.

Conclusion:

You might have heard of these screen resolutions like HD, UHD, 2k, 4K, and 8k. But you might not be aware of the meaning of terms and how they can help you. Many display features are considered to be alike but are completely different things. While buying a Screen like a smartphone or TV, should you only keep in mind the size of the screen but also the resolution?
